THOMPSON, Helen Ada May of Stoney Creek (formerly of Port Dover) passed away peacefully at Ridgeview Long Term Care Centre on Thursday, August 8, 2013 in her 102nd year. Cherished aunt of Catherine and Ed Rheinlander of Stoney Creek and Robert and Barbara Thompson of Tottenham. Much loved great-aunt and great-great-aunt of Kimberley Koczan and her husband John and their children Taylor and Megan of Stoney Creek and Robyn Hrab and her husband Steve and their son Lucas of Hamilton. Predeceased by her parents W. Bert and Dagmar and brother W. Ross and his wife Betsy. Helen was a life-long resident of Port Dover and gave many hours of her time in various volunteer organizations. She was a member of St. Paul's Church, St. Paul's Club for which she was treasurer for 30 years, a member of the Women's Auxiliary, Marburg Women's Institute, charter member of Eastern Star and a member of the Dollectable Doll Club. Helen was a Registered Nurse in the Canadian Armed Forces, serving as a Lieutenant at Camp Borden in the Army Medical Corp from 1943-45. In 1946 she worked for the logging company Marathon Pulp and Paper near Lake Superior and worked at Wilson Memorial Hospital. She taught basic nursing for the Canadian Red Cross, and worked as an RN at Hamilton General Hospital and Norfolk General Hospital. She returned to Port Dover in 1950 to assist with the family business and work at the Thompson Store until retiring in 1984. Helen was a proud breast cancer survivor. Special thanks to all the staff at Ridgeview Long Term Care Centre in Stoney Creek, who all played a part in Helen's care, especially the staff in Nash Jackson who allowed Helen to live with dignity and cared for her so deeply and with such respect during her final days. Thank you to Reverend Lola and Lois K. for being such good friends and confidantes to Helen. Your friendship was so special to her. The care and support provided to the family will never be forgotten. Friends are invited to meet with the family at THOMPSON WATERS FUNERAL HOME LTD., 102 First Ave., Port Dover 519-583-1530 for visitation on Monday, August 12, 2013 from 1pm to 3pm followed by the service at 3pm in the funeral home Chapel. Interment Port Dover Cemetery. The Reverend Lola Mather-Dyer officiating.
